‘Trio 868’ is a project of Mark and Beverly Davis to collect and perform music for guitar and two mandolins (http://markmdavis.com/trio_868). Since its formation the ‘third chair’ in the group has been filled by a number of players, and on this occasion at the Perth International Mandolin Festival in July 2012, Marissa Carroll was invited to join in on the delightful choro piece ‘Andre de Sapato novo’ ( Andrew has new shoes).

About Andre de Sapato Novo

André Vitor Correia, the composer of Andre de Sapato Novo was born in Rio Bonito , 18 of June of 1888 and passed away in Rio de Janeiro , 4 of March of 1948. He was  a composer , saxophonist and clarinetist from Brazil.

He was a prestigious musician, serving as director of harmony of the conservatoir Ameno Resedá in 1925. In 1931, his song “With me is in the lips” was recorded in the Odeon by Trio TBT

During 1936, he directed a jazz band, and at this time he switched the clarinet with the saxophone, becoming known as André Saxophonist.

Among his compositions, the choro “André de sapato novo” stands out, one of the most popular works in the environment of chorões. The André mentioned in the title is of course the composer himself and, according to stories told, the title relates the suffering that he went through during a dance, when he danced with a new shoe that tightened his feet.

The work was immortalized by the recording of the duo Pixinguinha (Saxophone tenor) and Benedito Lacerda (flute), made in 1947. Numerous subsequent recordings were made, among them four by Abel Ferreira, two by Altamiro Carrilho, one by the Regional de Canhoto, Jacob do Badolim etc.
