Hi reader

Merry Christmas! It is this time of the year that like most people, I dedicate time to do things that matter, like enjoy quality time with my kids and family, play music with friends, record music that I love and maintain my music instruments including my mandolin. So, this is what happened this week at the Mandolin Tuner blog:

... I decided it was about time to change strings to my beloved mandolin. Before doing so, I thought that it would be nice to populate the resources of the Mandolin Tuner blog with strings and create filters for brand and thickness. So here you are, it took me some time, but now I have for you a nice page you can access here, that includes 18 different types of strings from D'Addario, Elixir and Thomastik for you and me to select!

...another artist has been added in the Mandolin Tuner database. Alison Stephens (1970-2010) was from UK and holds a dear place in my heart for her sensitive performances.

...other things that happened behind the scenes: I started preparing to record a beautiful piece of music, "Tell Me One Word" from Manos Hadjidakis and also started working on two articles that will help you select strings and mandolins.

So, here are links to new info in the blog for this week, together with my popular older article about tuning problems related with strings:

Mandolin tuning for beginners

Why some mandolins won't stay in tune?

A very common situation for beginners that are learning to play the mandolin, is to have their mandolins failing to stay in tune. This is very frustrating, especially if you are not able to recognise the root cause. I have met some beginners that were so disappointed by this, that were even thinking to quit playing.

I have to be honest and admit that I faced the same problem when I was learning the mandolin, but being very-very young, it was obvious to me that I was doing something wrong and I asked advise from my older brother and other experienced mandolinists. This saved me from spending a lot of time trying to figure out what is wrong and I quickly learned the pitfalls that may affect mandolin tuning stability.
